Essay Topic - SDGs Goal 13

United  States President Donald Trump recently announced his decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreements, despite the fact that the United States is the biggest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world. The Paris Climate Agreements is not only limited to environmental issues, but also influences a wide range of fields including energy, society, industry, and investments. How does the withdrawal of great powers like the United States affect the goal to achieve SDGs? Also, what kind of efforts can the international society make to solve such problems?

Grand Prize Winner's Essay

In June 2017, the world leaders could not help but express regret and disappointment toward President Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement. Everybody could see President Trump wanted to carry out his ambitious goal "America First" without the Agreement getting in his way. He did not see the 'big picture'; making sure Earth being a safe place to live for humans. Because the Paris Climate Agreement is directly related to the survival of humans, the world leaders must figure out fast the damage America had done and devise new solutions to protect the environment.

Due to America's withdrawal, a number of problems had arisen, but the biggest damage would go to the stability of {aris Climate Agreement. If developed countries pull away from the Agreement just because it wanted to be 'greater', how would other developed countries think? They would most likely also want to withdraw from the Agreement for their own countries' good. There would be no guilt on their consciousness because America was the first to do so, and therefore they have the right to withdraw too. It is no joke when psychologists say it is likely if one person comes out of the room, the rest would also follow him.

Another problem would be the increase of carbon emission rates. Along with other developed nations, such as China, America runs ahead the biggest emitter of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas in the world. But due to the withdrawal, it is likely that the United States' emission rate will rise at an alarming rate because there is no line to restrain them anymore. Now America can simply produce their goods and not worry about other countries insulting them because they do not have the right to warn America. This is certainly a dangerous situation for the Earth.

Then what should the world leaders do to keep up achieving SDGs? What kind of measures should be taken to protect the Earth? The best scenario would be United nations taking up the lead and making sure no other countries withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. The United Nations should emphasize the fact that the countries are not opponents that they should fight to death. In the matter of Earth, at least, countries should cooperate together to make a world a better place to live. Countries should not just act on the behalf of their own benefits. In other words, they should stay away from President Trump's example.

Also, the United Nations should set up models and recommend other countries to follow them. For example, South Korea is at the top of follow the 3Rs; Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce. Koreans make recycling as their priority and always follow the 3Rs at their homes.  Other countries should follow examples, the United Nations should annually check the countries' participation and effort to save the Earth. This can be done by conducting a nationwide research.

In addition, the World leaders should carry knowledge about the current state Earth is in and what environmental plans are being enacted in their country. This is crucial because if the leaders do not know, it is most likely that their citizens will not know, too. The United Nations can check this by sending environmental experts to interrogate world leaders.

Last but at least, the United Nations and the members of the Paris Climate Agreement should not lose hope that America will unite again once more because their stance can change if there is a different president on the lead. This can be shown by the different stance America took when it was under President Obama and President Trump. While President Obama focused on being 'the world cop', President Trump is focused on being "America's cop'. Since there are voices in America who do not agree with Trump's plans, America may change its stance with a new president.

In conclusion, if the United Nations and the members of the Agreement work together, Earth may be saved without America's help. As long as people are all in this together, Earth will be fine and SDGs will be achieved. The world should remember; Keep your eyes on the 'big picture'.
